Nicky Hunter -Watercolour.

15/04/2025

SAG welcomed watercolour artist Nicky Hunter today. Nicky is an experienced watercolourist who began her career creating designs for textiles. Her work is loose and full of expression. Although she used a reference photograph she stressed that she liked to let the paint dictate a lot of what she creates.

Nicky was generous in sharing her list of materials -paper , brushes, and her favourite colour choices, although she uses a variety of brands of paint.

Chatting easily whilst painting, Nicky began using a feint sketch of the vase of flowers. Working wet on wet to apply colour for the flower heads. She showed how simple brush strokes can indicate the flower so it is recognisable without having to focus on details. Foliage is added between the flower heads- also creating the edges of the paler parts of the petals. Flicks of her brush add splashes and dots of colour.

The finished article showed a vibrant , colourful and lively vase of flowers in Nicky's beautifully loose style. As can be seen in some of her other watercolours, she uses the same approach with animals, birds, and landscape scenes.
