Tolerating Uncertainty

15/07/2024

Many times in our lives we have to deal with uncertainty but when we are anxious we can over-estimate the danger and the chances of bad things happening.

However, worrying doesn't affect the future outcome and is more likely to make us feel worse.  One way of dealing with this is to tolerate uncertainty and we can do this by using the acronym, APPLE.

Tolerating uncertainty with APPLE:

Acknowledge - notice the uncertainty as it arises

Pause - Don't react, just pause and breathe

Pull Back - tell yourself this apparent need for certainty is not necessary, nor helpful

Let Go - tell yourself that this is only a feeling or a thought.  You don't have to respond to it, let it go, imagine it floating away.

Explore - Explore the present moment. What can you see, hear, touch or smell?  Mindfully do something else to distract yourself from these anxious thoughts.

Click on the apple, then on Go to and it will take you to a self-help website, which further explains this.
