What is a mandala?

A mandala is a spiritual symbol used for centuries across different cultures and religions to represent the universe, and is often used as an aid to meditation; it can help to create a peaceful state of mind.

Mandalas are circular designs with repeating shapes and they often hold spiritual significance. Although sometimes basic in design, they are often extremely intricate.

The word "mandala" comes from the Sanskrit word for circle.

How can creating mandala patterns help with Wellbeing?

It focuses attention away from external stress, thereby encouraging a sense of relaxation and increased wellbeing.

Some of the main benefits of mandala colouring are:

  • stabilises blood pressure
  • increases creativity and self-awareness
  • reduces anxiety and relaxes muscles
  • improves self-confidence - freedom to colour outside the lines if you want

This beautiful mandala pattern was created by Carole Field, a member of SAG.
